Metropolitan Palace

Located on Al Maktoum Road in Deira, this was the first hotel we visited in Dubai. You walk into a grand entrance hall with two winding staircases in front of you. There’s no royal club here, just a choice of “deluxe” or “superior” rooms. It comes at a good price for a 5 star hotel.

We had a bed & breakfast option and breakfast was taken in the main restaurant downstairs where there was a large self-serve buffet.

One of the great features of this hotel is the rooftop swimming pool. We were slightly sceptical about this beforehand but it turned out to be pleasant and practical indeed. Towels and sunloungers were provided as you’d expect and being right at the top there’s very little to block out the sun.

There is a smallish bar/restaurant located by the pool, indeed this is where we ate on the very first night we arrived.

If you can survive the heat then it’s quite feasible to walk down into the busy shopping streets of Deira – turn right out of the hotel.

There is a supermarket on the road behind the hotel (turn left out the front door then left again, then right onto the parallel street). We also discovered an all you can eat buffet for Dhs65 at a hotel just down the road (turn left out of the hotel).
